Super/Natural

Gajah Gallery Yogyakarta

The exhibition SUPER/NATURAL features 20 contemporary artists from a broad spectrum of disciplines, exploring the ways in which their works mediate with perceptions of nature, reality and systems of belief in the region and beyond. The show presents artistic strategies that subvert nature or the natural order of things as a critical reflection of contemporary society; at times, revealing anomalies and contradictions that may well in fact, be natural in everyday life.

Gajah Gallery Yogyakarta proudly presented SUPER/NATURAL, a group visual and performance exhibition curated by Michelle Ho and Jason Lim.

Nature, as a subject matter in art-making, is one that has long captured the imagination of artists. Whether defined as intrinsic characteristics, represented as physical forms of the living environment, or contemplated upon as primordial states of existence, in contemporary times, reflections on what may be some of the fundamental bases for being and experience, have also raised much doubt and uncertainty. If the investigation of nature can be said to yield some forms of truth, artists have also sought to reveal the relativity of conditions that have typically afforded the sense of stability in our individual or collective realities.
