Coming from different generations and working across a variety of mediums, the artists featured in New Beginnings, the inauguration of Gajah Gallery Jakarta, will showcase both iconic works in their oevure, as well as new artworks made especially for the opening of Gajah Gallery Jakarta, which reveal their latest directions and experimentations. This show represents the celebration of a new beginning for the Gallery, as well as an expression of gratitude for the continuous support the Gallery has received from artists, collectors and friends in the Indonesian arts scene—without whom we would not have achieved this major milestone.
After years of working with Indonesia’s innovative and historically significant artists, expanding to its capital city of Jakarta was the natural direction to take for the Gallery to continue contributing meaningfully to the art scene. The new establishment will be located in the area’s prestigious residential complex ‘Casa Domaine’, which sits at the heart of the city and is known for the liveliness of its business district.
Positioning itself in yet another flourishing artistic centre, home to major art events and institutions such Art Jakarta and the National Gallery of Indonesia, the Gallery is honoured to engage with a fresh, vibrant audience and expand its long-held mission of championing Southeast Asia’s renowned contemporary artists and brightest emerging talents.
The launch of Gajah Gallery’s new space will be accompanied with a group exhibition ‘New Beginnings’, featuring a roster of prominent artists the Gallery has long worked with or represented: Ashley Bickerton, Erizal As, Fika Ria Santika, Handiwirman Saputra, I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, Jane Lee, Kayleigh Goh, Mahalakshmi Kannappan, Mangu Putra, Rosit Mulyadi, Rudi Mantofani, Semsar Siahaan, Suzann Victor, Uji ‘Hahan’ Handoko Eko Saputro, and Yunizar.
